I have inherited from my grandparents a group of 18th- and 19th- century gold and silver German boxes, which I treasure. The boxes can be used as ritual objects which contain spice-cloves , or as personal treasure boxes.

In the Jewish tradition, the spice boxes are often highly decorated in order to beautify and honour the blessing at the end of the Sabbath, when they are passed around so that everyone can smell the fragrance while making a blessing for the coming week.
